Still Working at 65 Decision Guide

Questions to answer before choosing between employer coverage and Medicare.

Start with employer coverage

  • Is the coverage based on current active employment?
  • How many employees does the employer have?
  • Is the prescription coverage creditable?
  • Will a spouse or dependent lose coverage if you leave the plan?

Compare the full monthly cost

  • Payroll deduction for employee-only or family coverage.
  • Part B premium and any income-related adjustment.
  • Deductibles, copays, and maximum out-of-pocket exposure.
  • Prescription costs and pharmacy network.
  • Dental, vision, hearing, and travel needs.

Before making a change

  • Do not cancel employer coverage before confirming Medicare effective dates.
  • Confirm how the decision affects your spouse and dependents.
  • Keep written proof of creditable coverage.
  • Ask the employer benefits department for plan documents.

Bring to your review

  • Employer benefit summary.
  • Latest payroll deduction amount.
  • Prescription list.
  • Doctor and hospital preferences.
  • Expected retirement date.
